This week, Rhys was sick and I had to juggle my plans around a bit. He’s doing much better now, and I’m hoping to get a little time to myself over the weekend. Here are a few things that caught my eye this week.
I’ve always loved snails, and used to have one as a pet. It seems there’s a giant snail terrorizing a neighborhood in Houston.
A glimpse into what the world eats.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. “What Is Your Relationship to Clothing?”
On leaning back in motherhood.
I’m a selfish woman, and proud of it.
Have a great weekend and a wonderful Mother’s Day!
Normally when I take outfit photos, the process is complicated. It involves the tripod, a remote control, lots of different poses, plus me running back and forth to adjust the camera as I go. Oh, and I’m usually dressed up and cinched in, posing for some imaginary or future event, with lots of red lipstick and powder to make my face look nice and bright.
Just for fun, I thought it would be interesting to document a week’s worth of my everyday outfits with my phone’s camera. The stuff I wear to drop the boys off at school, take them to the park, or run errands. I started the project on a Friday recently, but forgot to take a picture the next day. Still, I kept going, and what follows are the the outfits I wore over the course of a regular week in my life. It’s nothing glamorous at all, and you’ll notice a pattern here, too. I took all of the pictures in the morning before heading out the door, and though it’s hard to tell, my hair is washed and styled, and I do have makeup on. This is me in real life.

(Friday: Wearing one of my patterned button-ups from Anthropologie, on the way to a morning appointment.)

(Sunday: In a shirt (similar) by LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s, on the way to a lakeside park.)

(Monday: In a top by Garnet Hill. Mondays are reserved for catching up after the weekend, and maybe visiting a local park.)

(Tuesday: In the same style shirt as Monday, ready to do some heavy-lifting volunteer work while the boys are in school.)

(Wednesday: Wearing a vintage-style blouse from ModCloth, for a morning appointment.)

(Thursday: Wearing a tee from Anthropologie. I added a sweater for the boys’ school music program.)

(Along with some style of jeans, I wore these shoes by LC Lauren Conrad every day.)
I realize that I need a full-length mirror, but I’ve made do without one all these years. While I do sometimes mix things up with skirts and dresses, especially in warmer weather, I am essentially a t-shirt and jeans girl. I like tops with a little bit of detail, and I favor simple jeans in a darker wash. I’m also excited that my hair finally appears to be growing out!
So this is me in my regular uniform, without the bells and whistles, but smelling of delicious perfume. And now that I’ve shown you, I feel the need to do a full-blown photo shoot soon!
Do you have a daily uniform?
Since we found the perfect coffee table to withstand our little guys, I’ve dreamed of styling it beautifully, with books, flowers, and lovely objets d’art. I found this Raffia Tray at West Elm, and it’s a wonderful way to bring a bit of interest to the table. The natural material, combined with its geometric shape, is a nice dichotomy and works with the rest of the room.
I added a few fashion and design books and topped them off with a bowl of freshly cut roses, which coordinate nicely with those precious pink knobs on the drawer and also pick up some of the colors from my rug.
But seriously, who am I kidding? This little photo shoot was entirely staged, and while James and Rhys were playing outside in their sandbox one recent morning, I grabbed a few things from around the house and snapped a few pictures. I wish my coffee table looked like this, and one day, it will.
For now, it looks like this. My boys claimed that tray for their own the minute it arrived, and that was really its original purpose.
Someday, many years from now, I’ll have roses and vases and beautiful art books on display. And I’ll miss the trucks and puzzle pieces and random bits that my boys collect, so I’m choosing to treasure those objects now.
Since someday, they’ll be gone.
