The View From Here: Blogger Fame

June 10, 2013 · by Catherine · in The View From Here

The View from HereI can’t believe it’s the second week of June already!  Even though it’s not officially summer yet, it’s officially hot here, so to me, it’s almost the middle of the season.  I wonder what the temperature’s like way up there where Shayla lives.

Today’s question is: Have You Had a “Blogger Fame” Moment?

I think this question is hard to answer, because blogs and blog fame are so relative.  I have blogs that I absolutely ADORE, and if I met the bloggers in person, I’d probably ask for their autographs.  But to someone who has never read the blogs I love, that would just be insanity.  There are millions of blogs in the blogosphere, and though I wish I could spend all day reading and writing, it’s just impossible.  Blogs fit so many different niches and appeal to so many different types of people, and that’s what I love about them.  You can stumble across a new blog every day and become hooked, but you still can’t read them all!

My little blog is a labor of love, and I get so much satisfaction from writing and working on it.  I don’t expect to become rich and famous from it, and that’s not the point at all.  I really love having an outlet to share my writing and thoughts with others, and I’ve been rewarded in so many wonderful ways.

My closest brush with fame came last November, when my kitchen renovation was featured on My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia.  I’ve been a fan of Kristin’s blog for several years, and her lovely home became the main inspiration when we decided to update our house.  She graciously provides the resources she and her husband use in their projects, and I emailed her once to ask about the paint color in her guest bedroom, which I then used in our kitchen.  That correspondence eventually led to the feature on her blog, and I enjoyed a couple days with very high traffic when she linked to my site.

But, with all things, “fame” is fleeting, and things settled down quickly once a new post was published.  And that’s totally fine with me.  It was fun to experience the extra attention for a day or two, and then I went back to my writing and my blog that I love so much.  This is my safe little place on the internet, and I hope you enjoy it, too.

Be sure to check out Shayla’s response on her blog.  I’m curious to see what she says!  And feel free to share your own “blogger fame” moment in the comments.

This and That

Walking with Cake: Bird on a wire

(Bird on a wire in Marble Falls, Texas.)

This week, the boys and I adjusted to our new summer schedule.  It was crazy, stressful at times, and lots of fun, too.  I think we’re going to have a fantastic summer!  Here are a few things that caught my eye this week.

This article on medical philanthropist Deeda Blair is fascinating.

A flower-filled fashion shoot.

A local family’s experience in going gluten-free.

Quite possibly the most bizarre post on Apartment Therapy, ever.  Seriously, Maxwell, what were you thinking?

I know way more about The Bling Ring than I should, and I can’t wait to see the movie.

Tonight is brew night, and we don’t have any big plans for the weekend.  Lazy summer Saturdays are my favorite.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Gymnastics

Walking with Cake: Gymnastics

(James and Rhys attempting the balance beam.)

The boys are out of preschool for the summer, and I’ve been searching for ways to keep them busy.  I originally planned to sign them up for a weekly evening dance class (how cute are little boys in black ballet shoes?), but then a friend told me about a gymnastics center not far from our house.  I had no idea it was there, so I scoped it out, and discovered it had actual daytime classes and weekly times for open gym play!  I’m always excited to find new ways to fill our days, and this is going to be perfect!

I was not athletic as a child, and though I took ballet off and on for a few years, I didn’t know what to expect from gymnastics.  I’m not really a fan of the sport during the Olympics, and to be honest, gymnastics fashion (the weird leotards, glittery eye makeup, scrunchies, and barrettes) freaks me out more than a little.  But nobody looks like that at our gymnastics place, so I think it will be okay.  It’s mostly just a bunch of little kids who run around jumping on mats and trying to keep from falling off the balance beams.

We’ve already attended two open sessions, and the boys love it!  I’m supposed to stay within arm’s reach of each one as they run from center to center, bouncing on trampolines and jumping through hoops, all the while dodging other children and trying to follow the rules.  It’s a workout for all of us, and the boys leave sweaty and exhausted, hungry for lunch and ready for a long nap.

Today, they’ll start a short class, and if all goes well, we might continue into the fall.  I’m enjoying watching them explore and learn new skills, and best of all, it’s air-conditioned!
