Walking with Cake: Rimmel Stay Matte Powder

(Rimmel London’s Stay Matte Pressed Powder with my favorite applicators.)

I have really oily skin, and I’m always on the hunt for a good pressed powder.  My all-time favorite is Jane Iredale’s PureMatte Finish Powder, but the refill is fairly expensive and I go through the stuff in two to three months.  Recently, I was reading a back issue of Allure and stumbled across the magazine’s Beauty Blog Winners for 2013.  Tati Westbrook, of the YouTube channel GlamLifeGuru, listed Rimmel London’s Stay Matte Pressed Powder as one of her top five favorite products, and that kind of stuck with me.

Years ago, I got my hair done at Ulta Salon, and since I bought my hair products there, I always earned lots of points for their store reward system.  When I cashed them in, I often bought Rimmel London products, because they were really inexpensive and had such fun colors.  Plus, there’s something kind of glamorous about a product with “London” in its title.  I’m a sucker for advertising, I guess.

So when I was at Walgreen’s recently, I picked up a compact of this powder for less than $5 on sale.  I wasn’t really holding my breath that it would work wonders, but I did read many glowing reviews on Makeup Alley, and I decided to try it.

And guess what?  This stuff really works!  It is super light, finely milled, and doesn’t settle into my pores like many powders do.  It’s most definitely on par with Jane Iredale’s more expensive powder, and I’m so thrilled that I found it.  At around $5, it comes in a plastic compact without a mirror or a compact, so it isn’t ideal for application on the go.  That’s okay with me, since I prefer to apply it with a large brush or soft sponge over my foundation, and I’m saving my more expensive powder for touch-ups when I’m out and about.

I’m so excited to discover a drugstore product that works this well, and I definitely plan to keep it in my arsenal of favorite beauty buys.

Do you have any beauty secret weapons you swear by?

Anthro: USA 5

Walking with Cake: T.La, Velvet, and Weston Wear, via Anthropologie

(Pieces by T.La, Velvet, and Weston Wear.)

This is my fifth and final post in the Anthro: USA series and I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have.  Just to refresh your memory, to meet my criteria, each brand must have at least five American-made pieces currently for sale at Anthropologie.  You can view my previous posts in the series on my Portfolio page.

T.La:  A line of classic and comfortable tees.  The Printed Raw-Edge V-Neck shown above is perfect for wearing alone during the warmer months and layering with a cardigan or blazer as the temperature drops.

Velvet:  Lovely, draping knits in a variety of flattering styles.  I especially love how modern and feminine each piece is.  The Keynote Tunic is a like a t-shirt and dress all rolled into one, with a gorgeous pattern that adds a bit of glamour.

Weston Wear:  One of my favorite brands from Anthropologie, Weston Wear is a lovely line of dresses and blouses with feminine details.  I’ve shown you two separate pieces here and here, and I recently purchased another top.  The Glace Top above is perfect for parties this holiday season.

I hope you found this series helpful, and hopefully it will inspire you to find more ethical options while shopping at your favorite stores.  I learned quite a lot in my research, and I’m planning to continue the series in some form or another as other brands and stores catch my eye.  And as always, if you have ideas or suggestions, please feel free to share them.

This and That

Walking with Cake: Accidental Altar

(I strung tiny lights on my plant stand, just for fun.)

It felt good to get back to a regular week after the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, and we’ve only got one more before things kick into full holiday swing around here.  We’re expecting some really cold weather this weekend, and it will be nice to relax and stay snuggled up inside.  Here are a few things that caught my attention this week.

First, remembering Nelson Mandela through music and pictures.

Black T-Shirt Campaign, a new movement against modern-day slavery.

A great list of independent artists, designers, and crafters.

“I’ve worked at McDonald’s for 5 years and have 4 kids.”

Porsches and babies are totally different things.

Lots of television shows are influencing baby names.  (I sometimes call my tyrannical, blonde three-year-old, “Joffrey.”)

Being a dad is hard. Birthday parties are hard.  Three kids is hard.  Dying is easy.

And how I really feel about The Sound of Music.  So sorry.

Have a wonderful weekend!
