Walking with Cake: Andy Warhol Poster

(My new Andy Warhol poster.)

A few weeks ago, I stumbled across a poster sale at One Kings Lane, and came away with two new prints for my empty walls.  The first is an Andy Warhol painting of Princess Diana, and like I told Ryan, I bought it almost immediately because it seemed like the right thing to do.  I’ve always loved Warhol’s art, specifically how accessible it is, and I’ve always loved Princess Diana, too.  I was fortunate enough to see her dress tour when it came to Houston years ago, and I had the opportunity to stand alone in a room with her wedding dress for a very long time.  It was an experience I’ll never forget, and when I saw this poster, I knew it was meant to be.

Walking with Cake: Modigliani Poster

(My new Modigliani poster.)

My second poster is a print of Amedeo Modigliani’s Woman with a Red Necklace, which also holds a special place in my heart.  My mom is an art lover, and one of my favorite childhood memories is perusing through her coffee table book of Modigliani prints.  That book was my introduction to the art world, and I was fascinated by his portraits of women with long and graceful necks, inspired by African masks and artwork.

The posters are very odd sizes that don’t fit standard frames, so I finally found the RIBBA series at IKEA and ordered two large frames online.  That proved to be a mistake, and both frames were slightly damaged in transit.  But I was able to repair them with a bit of glue and lots of patience, so I avoided a trip to the actual store.  The framing process turned into the ultimate DIY experience, which I guess is the point of IKEA products, and I’m pretty proud of my framing efforts.

Andy Warhol would approve of his print, bought in an online flash sale, hanging in the hallway of a suburban home in a small Texas town. It’s exactly what he wanted art to be, and I love that.  I don’t know if Modigliani would agree, but hopefully he’d cut me a little slack.

Art is meant to be enjoyed, and I love these images of women, so different and also so similar.  I hung both prints in my main hallway, which is narrow, and the dark frames actually make the space feel bigger, somehow.  I love looking at them as I pass by, and I’m so glad I finally took the plunge and hung meaningful pieces there.

Anthro: USA Spring 2014

March 10, 2014 · by Catherine · in (Fair) Fashion & Beauty

I received Anthropologie’s March catalog recently, and I was pleasantly surprised to find lots of American-made items inside.  Some are by brands I’ve profiled in the past, but there were some new lines, too.  I’ve compiled a list of the new look book items to share with you, as a reminder that it’s easy to make more ethical choices at some of your favorite stores.

Walking with Cake: Sahara Cuff by Winifred Grace; Visit Capri Tee by Sol Angeles: via Anthropologie

The Sahara Cuff by Winifred Grace is lovely and perfectly suited for spring trends.  The line currently features six pieces at Anthropologie and all are made in the United States.

Sol Angeles’ Visit Capri Tee is casual and fun, but can be combined with a floral skirt for a dressier spring look, too.  Sol Angeles lists seven pieces in their Anthropologie collection, and all are made in the United States.

Walking with Cake: Tingi Jacket by Greylin; Skyscape Buttondown by Cloth and Stone: via Anthropologie

(The Tingi Jacket by Greylin and the Skyscape Buttondown by Cloth and Stone, via Anthropologie.)

Greylin’s Tingi Jacket is one of my favorite items in the look book, and I really love its flattering cut and the gorgeous print.  This jacket would work well as a layering piece for many months to come.  While the collection is fairly large, this is the only piece made in the United States.

The Skyscape Buttondown by Cloth and Stone is a gorgeous blouse that comes in several soothing spring colors.  It is listed as American-made in the print catalog, but as Imported online, along with some other items in the brand’s collection. My guess is that the “Imported” label is a mistake, which has happened before, though I can’t confirm its origins completely.  Assuming it is made in the United States, the entire line is classic and elegant, with a nod to comfort and everyday wear.

The current look book also contains items from lines I’ve profiled in the past, including the Francophile Tee by T. La, the Root Needles Necklace by MADE (fairly made in Kenya), the Saidia Pencil Skirt by Eva Franco, Weston Wear’s Aures Sheath, and Puella’s Striped Swing Tunic.  These are great pieces and versatile enough to add to your spring wardrobe.

I hope you’ll find this post helpful if you plan to shop Anthropologie’s new catalog, and you can find the rest of my Anthro: USA series here.

This and That

Walking with Cake: Dried Flowers 2

(Drying flowers from Valentine’s Day.)

Wow, this week flew by and the boys have Spring Break next week.  We don’t have any big plans, but it will be nice to have a bit of downtime after a few busy months.  I’m hoping the weather will cooperate and we can play outside more.  Here are a few things that caught my attention this week.

Peer pressure and taste in art.

Violet Grey is now curating a select group of cosmetics.

Ridiculously cute Game of Thrones figurines.

“Lupita Nyong’o: A Star is Born.” (I totally bought that lip balm.)

Ben Affleck on his work in Congo.

Remember Kelis?  She’s bringing her food truck to South by Southwest next week, and no, she’s not serving milkshakes.

Edward Snowden will be there, too. Remotely.  (The Texas Tribune will stream his talk live.)

And are trigger warnings really necessary?

Have a wonderful weekend!
