This and That

Walking with Cake: Daisy

(A fall daisy.)

This week was pretty run-of-the-mill, though we’re all feeling the effects of fall allergies. A cool front moved through last night, and we should have beautiful weather this weekend.  Here are some things that caught my eye this week.

It’s impossible to ignore the news these days, and this piece about a Sierra Leone hospital ravaged by the Ebola virus is truly heartbreaking.  It puts so many things into perspective.

At the same time, there’s no room for panic. So much of the media seems to encourage it.

Sexual misconduct at an immigration facility in south Texas.

The tragic reality of part-time work in the United States.

A post about the really hard aspects of motherhood.

Because parenthood is really like this.

I’m reading Lena Dunham’s book right now, and this review is pretty accurate.  Also, there are illustrations and the font is quite large.

A profile of Chloé’s creative director.

I watched the pilot for “Transparent” and I’m eager to start the rest of the season.

This song is really weird, Sherman, and this one is really pretty.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Cardigan Craze

October 1, 2014 · by Catherine · in (Fair) Fashion & Beauty

October is here, and while it’s still warm where I live, I’m thinking ahead to cooler fall days.  I’m rarely in need of a winter coat, but I live in cardigans for fall and winter, and a few of my old ones are in need of some repair.  I found this interesting post about adding new life to your old sweaters, and I just might try these tips to squeeze another season out of my cardigans.  I’m not very handy with a needle and thread, but I could manage adding an elbow patch or two.

I’ve also got my eye on a few cardigan options for later this year.  It’s too early to take the plunge yet, but they sure are pretty.

Curator’s Ryder Cardigan is at the top of my list, and I love the simple, slouchy style that doesn’t include buttons.  It looks more like a coat, but since it’s cotton, it won’t be too stifling as Texas temperatures slowly drop. The space-dyed pattern is fun and modern, and I honestly can’t decide if I love the black or white version better.  Best of all, it’s made in San Francisco, like all of Curator’s clothing.

Do you have a favorite?

Walking with Cake: Velvet's Slub Cardigan

I also love Velvet’s Akasha Denim Terry Slub Open Cardigan (phew!) and I seem to be drawn to the marled look this season.  This sweater is also loose and drapey, and is made in the United States, too.  I’ll have to choose eventually, and I’ll let you know if I pick one of these.

Are you adding any fall items to your wardrobe this season?

A Few Words: Fall Inspiration

Walking with Cake: Fall Board

(My fall inspiration board.)

Last week, I shared a few thoughts on blogging and writing, and I’m hoping to turn it into a series as I ponder different blogging ideas.  I finally went through my fall magazine collection and pulled out a few images to inspire me. It’s a fun, if tedious, process and I love having things to look at while I’m writing posts and searching for words.  This season, I’m really drawn to dark florals, as well as simple silhouettes.  I have no idea if those details will start to appear in my wardrobe, but I enjoy looking at the pictures while I’m working at my desk.

You might have seen this recent New York Times article on blogging, as it’s currently making its way around the blogging world.  I have definitely noticed a few blogs closing their doors (or laptops) recently, and with all good things, the end is inevitable.  I mentioned this in my Alt for Everyone recap, but Kelly Beall of Design Crush talked about blogs evolving, rather than dying, so bloggers have to adapt, too.  There definitely seems to be a shift in blogging these days, and bloggers are posting less frequently, just as readers are commenting less, too.  It’s an interesting change to watch.

And I was inspired by my Alt classes, so I made a few small changes over the weekend.  I thought a lot about how I use Pinterest, which is only to share images I love and images from my blog.  I switched to a business account, so easy for bloggers to do, and I also applied to use rich pins that provide more information than just the image and title.  This will allow me to easily share my wordier blog posts and provide a bit of information below each image, too.  The process was really simple and I followed this tutorial.

I also read this post over the weekend and was struck by Natalie’s thoughts on writers being better at noticing beautiful things, rather than creating beautiful things themselves. This is something I’ve always struggled with, and it was wonderful to find it so well-written and explained.
