Walking with Cake: Mata Traders Shanghai Shift Dress in Black

(Easy summer dressing by Mata Traders.)

I’ve had my eye on this Shanghai Shift Dress by Mata Traders for a while now, but I wasn’t sure it would work for me.  It looks adorable on the model, of course, but I worried about the length and the overall cut.  Finally, I figured I’d give it a try, and return it if it didn’t work.  When the dress arrived, I was incredibly thrilled by the fit!  It’s short and flirty, but not too cutesy, and the shape is extremely flattering.  The dress has ruching in the front and back, which gives the pattern its shape.  Some of the fabric sticks out a little in the stomach area, so I cinched it with my trusty gold belt, added my strappy sandals and VavaVida bracelet, and wore it for Rhys’ party last Saturday.

I first wore this dress during a heatwave the weekend before, when the temperature reached 106 degrees Fahrenheit by noon.  It was hot, to say the least, but I felt cool and comfortable running errands.  I know I’ll get a lot of use from this dress throughout the summer and into the fall, and I’m really considering buying it in another color, too.  The red colorway is calling my name and would be perfect for the Texas heat!

The View From Here: Your Ideal Reader

July 8, 2013 · by Catherine · in The View From Here

The View from HereOur weekend was nice and long.  We celebrated Rhys’ third birthday with friends and family, and I caught up on some much-needed sleep.  I’ve been burning the candle at both ends lately, and I’m trying to be better about that.

This week’s question is: What Is Your Ideal Reader Like?

To be perfectly honest, I welcome any and all readers, but from the comments I get from regular readers, I think my ideal reader is a lot like me.  I’d say my blog is for women in their mid-20s and beyond, and I’m sure some of my post topics appeal to mothers, specifically.  I don’t like to think of myself as strictly a mommy blogger, only because I started this blog to have a creative outlet outside the realm of child-rearing.  But I know the things I write about tend to resonate with fellow moms, and that is totally fine.

When I think of a topic to write about, it’s really because I’m interested in the subject, and I try to go about it in a way that I hope is interesting to other people, too.  I’m not a big blogger by any means, and I don’t have troops of loyal followers, so that fact gives me room to explore different interests and topics other bloggers might not feel comfortable writing about.  Take my recent political posts, for instance.

My ultimate goal with blogging is to have fun and feel a bit fulfilled creatively, and hopefully I’ll encourage a few readers along the way, too.

If you’re reading, I hope you’ll feel free to join the conversation, and don’t forget to visit Shayla’s blog to check out her response.

Also, we are always in need of more questions to explore in this series, so if there’s something you’d like us to cover, feel free to suggest it!

This and That

Walking with Cake: Crape Myrtle Tree

(The Crape Myrtle blooming in our front yard.)

This week was a short one, and we celebrated the Fourth of July quietly at home.  Tonight is brew night, and we’re gearing up for a fun weekend celebrating Rhys’ third birthday!  Here are a few things that caught my eye this week.

Giving birth in the United States is one of the most expensive things a woman will ever do.

Insurance should cover midwifery care.

One father’s perspective on the abortion issue.

A Barbie that looks like the average 19-year-old girl.  A real one.

A new exhibit of royal dresses at Kensington Palace.

And the Battle of Gettysburg re-enacted, with just a few modern conveniences.

Have a wonderful weekend!
