The View From Here: Blog Design

July 22, 2013 · by Catherine · in The View From Here

The View from HereLast week was really rainy and fairly cool, but we are back to high temperatures as July quickly draws to a close.  It hasn’t been the hottest summer I’ve ever experienced, thankfully, so I try to remind myself of that!  This week, Shayla and I are discussing blog design.

Today’s question is: How Often Do You Change Your Blog’s Design?

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, then you know the answer is A Lot!  When I moved here from Blogger, I tried to keep things looking exactly the same at first, so people would recognize it as the same blog.  But then I started spreading my wings a little and changing things here and there.  Shayla designed a lovely new header for me, which I kept for several months, before moving on to something more minimal.  And then I decided to take on a complete blog redesign with Kory Woodard this spring, and I’m thrilled with the results!

Walking with Cake: My moodboard by Kory Woodard

(My blog’s moodboard, created by Kory Woodard.)

Kory is a really talented graphic design student, and she captured the exact look I was imagining.  Picking images for my moodboard was incredibly fun, and it was wonderful to see my general ideas come to life.  We didn’t do anything too drastic, and Kory helped me keep the focus on my writing, which was the original goal.

Now things just feel the way they’re supposed to look, and I’m planning to keep this design for a long, long time.  I have a growing appreciation for graphic design, but it is something that doesn’t come naturally to me.  It took me a while to realize I needed professional help (pun intended), but it was an experience that I’d definitely recommend.

If you’re a blogger, how do you feel about blog design?  Is it something you enjoy, or did you find a designer?  Don’t forget to check out Shayla’s response, because she is really talented when it comes to design, too.

This and That

Walking with Cake: All Grown Up

(I caught these guys returning to their actual birthplace.)

This week was busy with appointments and errands, and the boys had a gymnastics showcase on Thursday.  Tonight is brew night, and we’re planning a quiet weekend.  Here are a few things that caught my eye this week.

Love in the time of fracking.

This article is from last year, but it’s making me think twice about that Amazon Prime subscription.

A new book about breakfast tacos.

What the royals are up to as they wait for a new heir to appear.

The latest Heisman Trophy winner is quite a dapper dresser.

Texas’ House Bill 2 was signed into law yesterday.

And our governor’s actions have understandably offended New York City.  Be sure to watch the video!

Meg Wolitzer’s Sylvia Plath summer.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I’ll soon celebrate my blog’s first birthday, and this year has brought so many wonderful experiences and changes, too.  I never expected it to be anything other than a fun hobby, but it quickly became apparent that blogging has become my way of life.  And now that my little guys are getting older and I’m able to carve time for myself away from them, I’m hoping to pursue interests I’ve put on the back burner for a while.

I’ve been so inspired by the wonderful bloggers I’ve met this past year, as well as by the conferences and workshops I’ve attended, and I now feel ready to take the plunge by offering my services in proofreading, editing, and writing.  My goal is to help fellow bloggers and creatives in these areas by sharing knowledge in my field of expertise.  As a former English teacher, I have lots of writing and reading experience, and I am available to pick up where you leave off.  I can proofread your professional site or publication, edit your posts, or assist with writing you may require.

If you are in need of these services, or know someone who is, please drop me a line!  I’m excited to begin this new part of my blogging journey and I can’t wait to see where it leads.
