This week really felt like we are getting back to a schedule for fall, and I love that feeling. The boys are adjusting well to school, and I’ve got a little extra time to myself during the week, too. This weekend, we’ve got a couple of small things planned, and it should be quiet and relaxing. Here are some things that made me look twice this week.
Congress posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to the four young victims of the 1963 church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. I hope the families of the young girls can finally find some comfort and peace.
A twin profiles his brother, who was born with cerebral palsy, while he was not.
Twin girls who are photographed every year of their lives from ages 9 to 16. The photos are mesmerizing.
Who do women want to see as models?
A new exhibit examines the issue of the gay aesthetic in fashion.
A short and sweet video on Steampunk.
And my second post in a five-part collaboration with The Glamorous Housewife.
Finally! These LED light bulbs look like something I might actually like.
Have a fabulous weekend!
I’ve had the idea for this post in my head for a while, but I felt silly actually writing it. Then, I saw this piece in San Antonio’s local paper, and knew this was my chance. Bloggers reveal so much about our lives on a daily basis, so I thought it would be fun to share a few things I’ve never, ever done. You might be surprised.
I’ve never had a professional manicure or pedicure. While I don’t always paint my fingers, my toes are always polished. Feet kind of gross me out, so I could never let someone else give me a pedicure. I do my own every two weeks or so, even when I was hugely pregnant, and they look just fine.
I’ve never been to Disneyland or Disney World. I never went as a child, and Ryan isn’t a fan of Disney; plus, I’m scared of roller coasters. No big deal. I used to teach at a learning center, and when my students had to write a “Compare and Contrast” paper, so many of them always compared and contrasted the two parks. I read a ton of those papers, so I got the inside scoop. Disney World is bigger.
Even though I’m a native Texan, I’ve never owned a pair of boots (if you don’t count the square-toe kind with zippers from back in 2002), and I’ve never been out dancing. I mean, I’ve been to weddings where people two-step, but I have no clue how to do it.
I helped my younger sister learn to roller skate on the sidewalk in front of our house, but I never learned myself. Which means I can’t ice skate, either. Obviously, I was not the life of the party back in junior high when my friends hung out at Skateland.
My high school football team was kind of a big deal when I was in school, but I never, ever, never went to a single football game during my entire four years there. It was a source of pride for me.
I’ve never been tubing down the Guadalupe River, which is a favorite past-time of Texans. I’m not the outdoorsy type, plus it’s hot, so I just don’t get floating down a river in a plastic tube when you could be in air-conditioning.
So, now that I’ve bared my soul and revealed my shortcomings, what are some things you’ve never done?
This isn’t really a fashion post. I just wanted to show you another example of how I dress on a random weekday in early September, when the morning temperature is tolerable, but triple digits are still predicted for the afternoon hours. I’m craving fall’s cooler weather, which won’t truly arrive until November (if we’re lucky), so I can make simple changes to my wardrobe until it’s time for jeans and cardigans again. Briefly.
This outfit isn’t new either, and it’s a re-mix of pieces you’ve seen before. These are the DIY Boyfriend Jeans from the spring, paired with an old ModCloth blouse and Kohl’s shoes from last spring, too. I guess that goes to show that the Texas spring feels the same as late summer/early fall here. And I’m nothing if not consistent, so I’m getting lots of use from my daily uniform again. All summer, I wore skirts and dresses, and I find myself slowly going back to pants and jeans again these days. Wishful thinking, I guess.
By afternoon, I changed out of this top, since it isn’t cotton and makes me feel hot. But I love the little vintage details on it, and it’s perfect for a late summer morning outing.
The shoulders have lace applique and slightly puffed sleeves, and the back has a modest keyhole and tie closure. The blouse is no longer available, but I’ve worn it so many times, with both pants and skirts, and I love its ease and versatility.
I also added my VavaVida Bracelet and new fall bag (not pictured), since I’m trying to blend my love of vintage-style clothing already in my closet with ethical pieces, and find a way to make them work together. The jeans are technically recycled, and the top and shoes are old, so that’s a start.
Are you sprucing up your wardrobe in anticipation of fall?
