Walking with Cake: Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters

(Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters in Lollipop and Pink Truffle.)

I’ve heard wonderful things about Revlon’s Colorburst Lip Butters for a while now, and I decided to try them out for myself this week!  Even though I live on the edge of a fairly large city, my local drugstores don’t always carry the beauty products I’m looking for, or the shades I want to try. Remember my fruitless hunt for purple mascara?

I placed a small Amazon order for the boys’ upcoming Valentine’s parties, so I added two of the colors, Lollipop and Pink Truffle, to my basket for fun.  I was really inspired by Kalyn’s posts (she’s Shayla’s sister!) on the lip butters, and she has written a comprehensive, three-part guide to many of the colors  (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).  Since the lip butters are affordable and come in so many different shades, they are fun and easy to collect!

Lollipop is probably my favorite of the two, since it’s a brighter pink, the shade I’m most drawn to these days.  But I’ve read tons of great reviews for Pink Truffle (Kalyn’s favorite color), a slight pinkish-brown nude, and it is really flattering on many different skin tones.  A nude lip tends to wash me out, but with a bit of pink gloss on top, it’s perfect for around the house, quick errands, and when I want a more subdued look.

There’s definitely an addictive quality to these lip butters, which are so moisturizing, easy to apply, and fairly long-lasting.  I’m excited to try the other shades soon, and fingers crossed, hopefully I can even locate them at one of my neighborhood stores.

Have you tried Revlon’s lip butters? Do you have a favorite color?

Dessa

When it comes to music, I’m a lover of words, and I always fall for songs with lyrics that really stand out.  So it’s no surprise that I was immediately drawn to Dessa’s songs after hearing her on the radio frequently in the last few months.  With a background as a technical writer, Dessa’s spoken word style is incredibly intelligent and refreshing.  You have to keep up with her pace if you want to hear what she’s saying, and I like the challenge of taking it all in.

Dessa is also part of Doomtree, a hip-hop collective of talented artists.  I like her a lot on her own, though.

Her most recent album, Parts of Speech, features several songs that I’ve come to love, including “Call Off Your Ghost,” “Fighting Fish,” and “I’m Going Down,” a cover of the Bruce Springsteen song.  “Call Off Your Ghost” describes a past relationship and the words are so poignant, and “Fighting Fish” references Zeno’s Arrow, something I had to look up, which must come from Dessa’s days as a philosophy major.

I’m listening to these songs in heavy rotation these days, and I’m excited to check out her previous work, too.

“Batter My Heart”

The cold weather is really getting to me lately, but I got a small treat in the mail yesterday that cheered me up!  I ordered this Hammered Rose Gold Necklace from Project Dahlia, and since it came from Toronto, it took a while to arrive.  But it’s here now and I’m in love, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

I haven’t worn delicate necklaces since the boys were born, mostly because babies, by their very nature, are curious and like to grab things.  But my little guys aren’t attached to my hip any longer, so I can wear pieces like this again.  I chose the hammered style, since it’s a bit rough and imperfect, like a real heart might be.

I’m still on a rose gold kick, and this pretty piece will work nicely with so many of my daily outfits through the spring and summer.  It’s already brightening up my winter, too.

(And just for fun, here’s “Batter my heart, three person’d God,” by one of my favorite poets, John Donne.)
