This and That

Walking with Cake: Valentine's Flowers

(Flowers from Valentine’s Day.)

After the long weekend, this week really flew by. I’m looking forward to warmer weather, for a few days at least, and the annual Chinese New Year festival in Austin. Here are a few things that caught my eye this week.

The news is broken.

Texas pastors rallied for LGBT rights in our state.

A same-sex couple was married in Austin on Thursday. (Sadly, they were the only couple allowed to marry and their marriage is already under attack.)

A lengthy article on the controversy surrounding Harper Lee’s “new” book.

An interview with author Anne Tyler.

Historic San Antonio photos of former slaves.

The women of Mardi Gras.

A fascinating article about Airbnb’s presence in Japan.

A trailer for the final season of “Mad Men.”

And New York Fashion Week in ten pictures.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Walking with Cake: Olmox Filigree Jewelry

(Beautiful pieces from Olmox Fine Filigree Jewelry.)

Recently, I shared my exciting news about opening an online store of ethically curated clothing and accessories. Things are going well, and part of the process includes waiting. I’m waiting for orders to arrive and for behind-the-scenes things to line up, and it’s all happening the way it’s supposed to work. I’m not always the most patient person, but I am a planner by nature, so this waiting period is beneficial for me.

My goal is to open the store by May or early June, and I’m really excited about the things I’ll offer. You can see a little peek in the picture above, and I’m so thrilled to be carrying filigree jewelry handmade by Liliana Olmos of Olmox Fine Filigree Jewelry. Working with her has been a joy, and I’ve been incredibly impressed with all of the companies that I’ve worked with so far. I’m starting small, but if things go well, I’d like to add select pieces from different fair trade lines to share with you.

Kory is helping me with my store’s logo right now, and soon I’ll be able to share that with you, too. It’s still a waiting game, but I’m learning to be patient to make sure things are done properly.

Sturgill Simpson

February 16, 2015 · by Catherine · in Arts & Entertainment

As a Texas girl, there will always be a place in my heart for good, old-fashioned, country and western music. Sturgill Simpson is getting a lot of airtime on my local radio station lately, and I love his cover of “The Promise” by When in Rome. Do you recognize it?

Simpson sounds so much like Waylon Jennings and the other country singers I heard on the radio as a young girl, and I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic when I hear his voice. He’s a young guy, at 36, and it’s amazing to me that he’s able to capture the sound of an earlier era so distinctly.

I’m taking today off to spend time with my family while they are off school and work, but I’ll be back later this week. Hope you had a great long weekend, too.
