The View From Here: How Did Your Blog Get its Name?

February 25, 2013 · by Catherine · in The View From Here

The View from HereShayla and I are continuing our blog collaboration, and I hope you’re enjoying it as much as we are!

Today’s question is: How Did Your Blog Get its Name?

I actually get asked this question fairly often, and the sad fact is that I don’t really bake.  I mean, I do, but it’s not my favorite thing and this isn’t a baking blog.  Sorry!  And I think the real story behind my blog’s name is not particularly interesting, but it does sort of show the evolution of my blogging experience.

The truth is that when I first started blogging, back in 2008, I came really, really close to calling it The Sunny Side, after the old Carter family song, “Keep on the Sunny Side,” which I love.  But, I’ve always used my initials and maiden name (C+A+Kowalik) as my email and on forums, and that combination always gets corrected to Cakewalk with any spell check I might use.  So, I thought Cakewalk would be a fun, lighthearted name for my blog, since, in a weird way, it was me.  I chose that name, but could only get Walkingwithcake as my URL on Blogger, since Cakewalk was already taken.  That didn’t matter to me at the time, since my blog was personal and only my family was reading it.

Fast forward to 2012, when Ryan bought Walkingwithcake.com and encouraged me to switch to WordPress.  When I made the move and started a new blog, I really considered changing the name to Walking with Cake, because it just made sense.  But I didn’t, for a while.  I wanted my readers to recognize my new blog if they followed me over, and I also wanted everything to look the same.    Then, in October of last year, I asked Shayla to make a new header for me, and she did an amazing job.  And then I was lying in bed that night, thinking about my gorgeous new header, and I realized I should probably just go ahead and change the name of my blog, since my URL was Walkingwithcake.com, and when people asked what my blog was called, I always gave them the URL address.

So I changed it, and I’m officially Walking with Cake, and it just feels right.  As Shayla knows too well, I’ve changed my header a lot, and I’m getting ready to do it again (surprise!), but I won’t change the name again for anything, because it finally feels right.

That, in a nutshell, is the evolutionary story of my blog’s name.  Like I said, it’s not particularly interesting, and I don’t do a lot of baking.  But, “Oh man, I love the cake!”

Don’t forget to visit Shayla’s blog to hear the story behind her name!  And check back next Monday for the next question in our series.

Walking with Cake: Chinatown Koi Pond

(A koi pond at Austin’s Chinatown Center.)

This week flew by, and I was busy working on a blog-related event that I hope to share soon.  I also got to meet a fellow blogger who lives in my little city, Miss Donna of Discount Thief, and we spent two wonderful hours chatting about one of my favorite subjects!  This weekend will be quiet and relaxed (the best kind!), and we don’t have any major plans besides desperately needed haircuts for the boys.  Here are a few things that caught my attention this week.

This BBC News piece about Young House Love and their quest for work-life balance.  If you read their blog, then you know the Petersiks are DEDICATED to their profession, and they work like crazy.  All the time.  Here’s hoping they can find more downtime this year.

Sandra’s first Salon event, in which she takes blogging to the next level, in real life.  I dream of hosting something like this.

And last weekend, I heard part of my favorite radio station’s interview with the incredible Kris Kristofferson, who just released a new album.  Talk about a Renaissance Man.  Did you know that he was a Rhodes Scholar and a helicopter pilot before he became a songwriter?  And one of the songs on his new album was co-written by Shel Silverstein.  Plus, Kris Kristofferson is from Texas, so that makes him just about perfect.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Walking with Cake: Ruby Slippers

(My new pink flats by Adrienne Vittadini.)

Ryan needed a new pair of athletic shoes, so we all made a trip to the shoe store Monday morning.  I’m like a kid in a candy store when it comes to DSW (who isn’t?), and I came away with these little beauties.  Okay, so they aren’t that little in a size ten, but that just means I get more pink and glitter to flaunt.  You know how I love a pair of pink shoes, and these are comfortable and perfect for warmer weather.

Walking with Cake: Naturally pretty

(My shoes match my geraniums!)

Plus, they are the same color as my lovely geraniums, so I have a bit of spring in my step.  (That’s awful, I know.)
