Walking with Cake: Mata Traders' Shanghai Shift Dress

(Mata Traders’ Shanghai Shift Dress in red.)

I turned 35 on Monday, so I decided to treat myself to the red version of Mata Traders’ Shanghai Shift Dress, which I also own in black.  I’m not usually a fan of red, because it tends to wash me out and seems best suited for the holidays.  But this dress is all about summer, and since I find the cut and color flattering, I decided to invest in two different colors.  I paired it with a leather and gold belt and my trusty strappy sandals, which you can actually see since I’m not sinking into the grass.  I like this for a casual look, and I can also wear wedges or heels to dress things up a bit, too.

Walking with Cake: Detail in red

(The dress has ruching on the front and back, as well as epaulets on the shoulders, which I love.)

Since I’m short-waisted with fuller hips, I have always shied away from belts.  But somehow, these dresses seem more pulled together with a belt, so I’m re-thinking my old opinions and going outside my comfort zone with Anthropologie’s Linked Knots Belt.  I’m happy with the overall look, and I’ll probably wear one (or both) versions to Austin Style Council, which is quickly approaching.  Since Mata Traders’ clothing is cotton, it keeps me so cool and comfortable, and that is most important in this July heat.

Walking with Cake: Koto Watch by Tokyo Bay

(My Koto Watch by Tokyo Bay, with a new replacement band.)

I’m also wearing my favorite Koto Watch by Tokyo Bay.  I bought this last year and wear it faithfully, switching between a black and ivory band.  My original ivory band was pretty discolored from everyday use and from resting against my dark-rinse jeans, so I ordered a replacement and now it’s as good as new again.  I love the rose gold and pink watch face, and it’s a favorite part of my daily wardrobe.

I thought long and hard before buying this red dress, but it was a great birthday present, and I know I’ll get so much wear from it.
